"Croatia – I Hear It's Beautiful": John Malkovich is the New Face of Croatia
Vanja
Between Irony and Deep Roots
The opening of the commercial plays on the actor's trademark sarcasm: Malkovich portrays a Hollywood star initially reluctant to shoot an ad for a country he knows very little about, ironically complaining about everything "like a true Croatian," as many social media users joked. However, as the journey progresses, skepticism gives way to wonder.
From the historic walls of Dubrovnik to the crystal-clear waters of the islands, passing through the vineyards of Istria all the way to Zagreb, the video transforms into a story of inner discovery. For Malkovich, this is more than just a job: the actor has Croatian roots (his grandparents were originally from Ozalj) and has recently obtained Croatian citizenship and a passport.
Croatia no longer wants to showcase itself merely as a classic summer postcard, but aims to invite travelers to go beyond what they already know. "I hear it's beautiful... but the only way to truly understand it is to experience it."
With its hypnotic narrative and a production budget worthy of a true cinematic trailer, the commercial promises to be one of the most impactful tourism videos of the year, redefining the way Croatia presents itself to a global audience.
